Photosynthesis has a problem
The enzyme RuBisCO is essential for photosynthesis. But it kind of sucks at is job, and it’s getting worse with extreme heat.

How US efforts to protect an Indigenous oasis almost led to its demise
Переглядів 3 тис.8 місяців тому
On a breezy spring day, Lorraine Eiler, a member of the Hia-Ced O’odham tribe, walked with me around the border of Quitobaquito Springs - a strawberry-shaped oasis in the Sonoran Desert near Pima County, Arizona. Her family has lived in the area for generations. “If you do research on Quitobaquito, the majority of times you will read about the cattlemen that lived here in the area, about the pe...

The very bad math drying up the Colorado River
Переглядів 34 тис.Рік тому
California and Arizona are currently fighting each other over water. But this isn’t new - it’s actually been going on for over 100 years. At one point, the states literally went to war about it. The problem comes down to some really bad math from 1922. To some extent, the crisis can be blamed on climate change. The West is in the middle of a once-in-a-millennium drought. As temperatures rise, t...

How much could you save with an e-bike?
Переглядів 9 тис.Рік тому
Electric bike sales are booming. In the United States, retailers more than doubled their sales in 2020 and demand has only increased. Globally, we’re expected to reach 40 million e-bikes sold in the year 2023. It’s easy to see why. On the spectrum of transportation options, e-bikes have some clear benefits: They use a great deal less energy (and therefore cost less) than a personal car. They sa...
How snow loss is fueling the West’s megadrought
Переглядів 21 тис.Рік тому
Lake Mead is America’s largest reservoir, supplying water for 25 million people across the southwest. It’s also drying up - a kind of poster child for the ongoing drought in the West. But upstream, a much larger but lesser known source of stored water is also disappearing: mountain snow. This is how climate change is throwing one of the United States’ most critical sources of water out of whack...
What's the true cost of an induction stove?
Переглядів 28 тис.Рік тому
A cook's climate, health, and cost guide to the induction versus gas debate. For decades, cooking with a gas stove has been seen as the fanciest and most enjoyable way to cook. But are we really better off with natural gas? Climate experts and professional chefs alike say that there is an alternative that could give gas a run for its money: induction stoves. That is so cool!
The solution is very simple. Close down the major cities that are trying to exist in a DRY DESERT!!!! Human ego and their entitlement attitude is going to end the species.
Who is this white lady nobody ever heard of running her mouth? No qualifications given, just noise.
Hysteria. We’ve always had flooding. The Netherlands are under sea level too. The problem is the pumps - the contractors did substandard work. When strangers do bad research on a place they don’t know we get bullshit on UA-cam. Katrina flooded us because of the Corps of Engineers - did you hear the MRGO mentioned? It wasn’t levy failures, it was Congress refusing to act while the Corp ducked the mess it made.

"consider it for awhile." Ah the angst of the parasite inside me!!
Nature did fixed this problem. It's called C4 plants. Only C3 plants has this problem. But Evolution is about Survival of Good enough. And rubisco was good enough.

The stupid music makes it hard to hear.
Wow
Fire your audio engineer holy fuck please.
At twenty seven seconds he puts the blame (to some extent) on Climate Change. He has to pay tribute to the Climate Change worshipers or his video can't be taken seriously. It's like biologists giving tribute to evolution just to show that they are believers and not infidels.
I live in the city of Chicago. I work in the suburb of Chicago. I can ride my bike and take public transportation. I had a car but I did a voluntary repo because I fell on some Financial hard times. Some things without a car are difficult but overall it's not that bad
the most obvious question was never asked: why does Robbie Wilson's lab coat say Gehring?
Finally someone explains this problem that has ZERO to do with "climate change" and is 100% brought about by over use, and made worse by periods of drought.
Gas came first in my country. Electric stoves are the fancy new thing
This was great until you made it all about race Instead of class!
This video is soo wholesome, keep up the good work, make more content. This is good stuff!
As long as Monsanto isn't doing this we should be ok.
Lies on the water will never stop ! Up here in Sacramento Ca we don’t get water for Colorado River
Thank God for the brave hard working children in Africa mining rare earth elements to save the environment 🎉
These people are going to fuck up all planet since the long term undesired effects of those genetic modifications would be initially unknown. Just like us humans initially started using petroleum byproducts until we realised it's negative effects. Now we are almost addicted to it.
evil. disgusting. they look like literal gremlins and think they can design nature better than natural evolution can.
*Insert joke from Ian Malcom here* 😬😬😬
😂 Spending half my working career behind an asphalt paver I usher you nothing gets hotter than that by 3:00 in the afternoon. You can just about mold your hard hat with your hands. If it didn't kill us. You'll be all right. They need to stop screwing with the weather. See how that works for a while.
Maybe there is a reason rubisco is so inefficient…
This is a rich vs poor, not black vs white issue. Pretty sure the rich black people were less effected than the poor whites. Unfortunately the poor are the only demographic that society deems appropriate to discriminate against.
Truth. Those poor black areas were poor Irish and Italian neighborhoods until two generations ago. Nobody cared about them either when Betsey hit.
Thank you for making it easy to understand ❤
not sure this is a good idea, on a farming scales yes but theres probably a reason why rubisco is the way it is and we should do more research in that area before messing with things, as changing the dna of our crops could have enviornmental effects we can't predict
Stop attempting to say NATURE is wrong!! Nature isn't a FACTORY for your resource pleasure. It's a balanced multi frequency effect of the universe! Rewriting ANY natural DNA is basically DESTROYING IT. Humans and their dreams of being gods sheesh.. Just stop!
I think we need more CAM and c4 plants as well.
Once again, conspiracy theories were right all along.
The contact reports by 'Billy' Eduard Albert Meier (BEAM) and The Plejaren Federation have an extremely large amount of information about climate change (really climate destruction) and carbon dioxide. It's free online to read.
Don't we owe Mexico their "fair" share? Their claims are pre-California..
For home use, solar seems by far and away, the most practical. Forget 'grid tie". go with battery and inverter, with a charger connected to the grid, if needed. According to my calculations, a 24 hour battery will produce the lowest cost of energy storage, whether you choose Lead Acid, or Lithium.
Oh my. The CO2 seems to be so tightly packed it can make heat escape again. Probaly.
I wonder if uncontrolled plants with a new better enzyme would act as invasive species
And that is why se collect methane from cows
Only 1 lakh view 💀😖😖... Why..???
plants are green because of the green party
What did plants do in the Cretaceous?
Oh man I can't wait for snowball earth 2.0 I FUCKING LOVE SNOWBOARDIGN LETS GOOO
Sounds great, but won't someone own the food then? What could go wrong?
Be careful with your playing god, nerds.
So you’d rather genetically engineer the foundation of our food chain than correct human-caused climate change? We know how to fix climate change, which is the source of the problem. Instead of manipulating the fundamental enzymes of plants, which will probably just make rich people richer, maybe we should look at the source of the problem. Fix capitalism, food waste, and fossil fuels before elegant, tried and tested, plant physiology. I can see the argument that this could be just 1 of many tools to help us in the ongoing struggle of climate change but…come on. With our track record of genetic engineering, human monetary profit for the few will outweigh ethics, serving the marginalized, and multi-species survival.
Yeah I wish we could do that but I don’t think there’s any way to “fix capitalism”. Still I don’t think engineered RuBisCO is a very good idea
I can't hear you over the music
Try mixing it covid virus - you never know - it might work 😂
